FORLORN FORMS

Personification has always been my candy, transference my pastime. So is it the doll, or is it me, who’s feeling blue?

WISHING WELL

When you’re on a road trip and you see a sign that says “3 miles to the wishing well”, with an arrow pointing right, you turn right… and you eat magical mussels at a bar with locals from Saratoga Springs, you celebrate a mural from the 30s, and you give thanks for the look in the eyes of the man sitting beside you.

FLIGHT INVITE

We are what we surround ourselves with. At Chez Groeschel/Grant, I’m a thing that flies.

MARITZA

May your soul now be adorned and nurtured by all the beauty you freely provided everyone else, throughout your lifetime… Rest, fly, be, in peace. In color. In treasure.

GOODBYE

Relics assure us that mourning is unavoidable, striving to overcome is expected, and both impulses are stitched deeply into the fabric of who we are. My heart breaks for my friend, as he sees his wife for the last time today… May every light-filled relic in mind and spirit, find him. Featured: a shot from Gran’s basement.

GRAN ROCKS

She’d been a lifelong collector of smooth, round stones. At her memorial, we were all given the chance to take home a rock in remembrance.

BEAR IT

Still from my “Domestic Bliss Box”, standing as bittersweet proof that art is created by forces beyond the conscious mind. I didn’t know that my longtime partner was having an affair when I was fabricating this very piece for a show.

So what was it that led me to MORE

LOVE IS ON THE GROUND

The treasures of Valentine’s Day need not come from another. They may come from the environment. This one found me in Brooklyn, in front of the deli I used to frequent, and when I truly needed to see it. Love is a many splendored thing, and it’s day, in my opinion, is every day.

YOU, TIED WITH A BOW

A shot I took before I sent off “The Jennifer Box”, a custom piece containing an interior scene intended to support Jennifer’s moving through her recent loss of loved ones; to support her finding the treasures of now amidst her grief.

GRAN’S KITCHEN

An impromptu, bittersweet moment of rest taken while I packed up her art studio, to celebrate the classy lady who loved peach walls… the UHaul parked outside in a sobering darkness. I then pulled an all-nighter, alone with her shadow, down in the basement. Maybe she liked her vermouth dry because life can sometimes get too moist to handle; as evidenced by my face, that night.

BEAR GOING HOME

Home is a complex constellation. First pains get stewed with first relief points. Time refaces the familiar. Nostalgia refaces our memory. Its nectar cannot be tossed out with the floorboards. Its DNA cannot stop its radical dance No matter the elsewhere. A still from my autobiographical piece, “The Bear Face Box”.
